During an artistic research residency organised by the Institut français de Roumanie, the artist purchases two traditional Romanian wool-carding combs at a local flea market in Cluj-Napoca.
The term carding derives from the dried flower heads of the wild teasel plant, whose rigid heads are covered in tiny natural hooks. These were once used to comb, disentangle and clean raw wool, before being replaced by carding combs: handcrafted tools made from wooden boards fitted with one or more rows of iron nails.
Through a collaboration with the Ethnographic Museum of Transylvania in Cluj-Napoca,  La mémoire des peignes à carder (The Memory of the Carding Combs) takes shape as a video performance that revisits the reflections on rural memory and museumification first introduced in La mémoire de la faux (The Memory of the Scythe).
A pair of traditional local carding combs is brought into the ethnographic museum and put to use in front of a wall dedicated to the processing of hemp and wool. Surrounded by museum visitors and the restored tools that have been waxed and mounted on the wall behind protective barriers and signs prohibiting visitors from touching the objects, the artist combs invisible wool, mimicking the gestures associated with the traditional practice of carding.
